Plans for 2nd 6 weeks

I will be trying block scheduling this term, giving my children the rest of the hour after the subject lesson for free play time, which in the summer is usually outside. Morning Time Block 1 (probably about 9:00-10:00) Literacy : I plan to continue The Good and the Beautiful literacy curriculum, while being selective about the activities and lessons. My first grader will start with review of Unit 1 and do the informal assessment. We will plan from there. The basic rhythm will be Sight words/review short story from reader (5 minutes) Lesson from curriculum (10 minutes) Copywork from current literature/dictation/ authentic writing (5-10 minutes) Read aloud book of choice on couch (10 minutes with goal of increasing stamina) and later, During lunch (often outside), I'll read aloud from Beatrix Potter or James Herriot's Stories for Children . Morning Time

After trying several different combinations, this is roughly what I'm planning for this 6 weeks term of morning time, with a 6.5 and nearly 4 year old, leaning heavily on methods of Charlotte Mason and help from Ambleside online. My oldest, an early bird, will continue to come to breakfast after getting dressed, making his bed, brushing his teeth, washing his face, and feeding the chickens (to get his "high 5" for those 5 tasks). The preschooler sometimes sleeps late so whenever he joins us is just fine! We pray and sing a verse from a hymn, which will be I Need Thee Every Hour this term. Breakfast begins and after everyone is set, I read a Bible story and talk about it. Term 2 (second six weeks) wrap up/plans

Morning Time : Went pretty much as planned! Paper Sloyd is the favorite by far; I'm impressed, too, at how much more familiar my oldest is in using a ruler thanks to this weekly short activity. This term we will do the sign language alphabet more than once a week, as there was little retention. Fridays we will do different knot typing. Reading: We will be doing fewer s flash cards this term. On our week off between 6 week terms, I came to the realization that what is "busy work" to one child, may not be to another. I think many aspects of The Good and the Beautiful language arts curriculum are valuable, but to my 6 year old who retains so well anything auditory, and retells with so much detail orally, some of the word copying activities were unnecessary. I will continue to use the framework and objectives, but also be more open to modifying the "practice assignments."
